We're back with the third entry in our alginate taste-test series, This time trying Vanilla Caramel Rescue from Reflux Gourmet, a Napa, California-based brand.
Quick Refresher: What's an Alginate?
Alginates are naturally derived from seaweed. Once in your stomach, they form a raft-like mechanical barrier between your stomach acid and your esophagus. That's a fundamentally different approach from medications like PPIs, which work by suppressing acid production rather than physically blocking it from traveling upward.
The Vinegar Demo
As we've done with the other alginates in this series, we started with a visual test: a teaspoon of Reflux Gourmet dropped into a glass of vinegar to stand in for stomach acid.
This one behaved a bit differently than the last product we tested. At first it just sat at the bottom, not doing much. After a more vigorous spin (mimicking the natural movement inside your stomach), it started to rise, but noticeably slower than Reflux Raft did in our earlier test. Eventually it did float to the top and form a loose layer, similar to what we've seen before. Again, this isn't a real stomach, just a simple way to visualize the raft effect.
Taste Test: Vanilla Caramel Rescue
The label calls for one teaspoon per serving. Worth noting: this formula is a bit more concentrated than Reflux Raft, at roughly 420 mg of proprietary alginate compound per dose versus around 330 mg.
Texture: A thick, dark brown gel that genuinely looks like caramel sauce.
Flavor: This one is a standout on taste. It tastes remarkably close to liquid caramel candy. No burn, no medicinal aftertaste, just a dessert-like sweetness. It may be a bit sweet for some palates, but it's hard to argue with how pleasant it is to take.
Perceived effect: There was a noticeable soothing sensation after taking it, though it seemed to take a bit longer to fully activate compared to Reflux Raft in our side-by-side impression.

- Taste: 8/10 — tastes like dessert, genuinely enjoyable, though possibly too sweet for some
- Effectiveness: Promising — the raft formed and held at the top in our demo, doing exactly what an alginate is supposed to do mechanically, even if it took a little longer to get there than Reflux Raft
