Gaviscon Advance Review: The Fastest Alginate Raft We've Tested

Gaviscon Advance formed the fastest raft of any alginate in our taste-test series so far. It earned a 9 out of 10 for effectiveness. The aniseed flavor, though, scored just a 4.

This is alginate taste test number five in our series. Gaviscon Advance comes from the United Kingdom and is not sold in US stores, so American buyers have to order it online. Here's how it performed in our vinegar raft demo, how it tastes, and who should consider it.

What is an alginate?

An alginate is a naturally derived product made from seaweed. When you swallow it, it forms a gel-like raft that floats on top of your stomach contents.

That raft acts as a physical barrier. It helps keep stomach acid and acid vapor from traveling back up your esophagus, which is what causes the familiar burning and discomfort of acid reflux. Unlike a plain antacid, an alginate's job is to block reflux, not just neutralize acid.

The raft test: an instant barrier

Gaviscon Advance formed a raft within seconds, the fastest of every alginate tested so far. To show how an alginate behaves, I pour each one into a glass of white vinegar, which stands in for stomach acid.

This one didn't need any help. I didn't stir or swirl the vinegar at all, and a solid raft had already formed on the surface.

Then I gave the glass a good spin. The liquid underneath looked a bit like a snow globe, but the raft stayed firmly on top. Even after the taste test, it was still floating there. Judging by the demo, nothing is getting through that barrier.

The taste test: Aniseed, and Very Medicinal

The flavor is aniseed, which tastes a lot like fennel. I like fennel and will happily eat it raw, so I expected to enjoy this. I didn't.

It's a thin, pale liquid that runs right off the spoon. The taste is strongly medicinal, with a chemical edge that doesn't resemble fresh fennel at all.

Taste is personal, though. If you enjoy licorice or anise flavors, you may like it far more than I did. And sometimes the thing that makes you feel better isn't the thing that tastes best.

The verdict

Gaviscon Advance is the most effective alginate in the series so far, held back only by its flavor.

Choose it if fast, reliable raft formation matters more to you than taste, or if you already like anise and licorice flavors.

Skip it if flavor is a dealbreaker for you, or you'd rather buy something on the shelf at a US pharmacy.

Pair your alginate with sleeping elevated

An alginate raft works best alongside gravity, which is why so many people with nighttime reflux sleep with their head raised. Lying flat makes it easier for acid to travel up the esophagus. A gentle incline helps keep it where it belongs.

I'm Jon, the founder of Travelwedge PRO. It's the first and only self-inflating bed wedge, designed so you can sleep with your head raised wherever you are. It's made from high-rebound foam, so it expands on its own with no pump, then rolls up small for your suitcase.

Whether you're traveling or just want a bed wedge that packs away, shop Travelwedge PRO,
