If you deal with acid reflux or LPR, you've probably heard of alginates, the seaweed-derived supplements that form a physical "raft" on top of your stomach contents to help keep acid where it belongs. We're kicking off a series where we taste-test and review as many of these products as we can get our hands on, starting with Reflux Raft in Lemon Ginger.
What Is an Alginate, and How Does It Work?
Alginates are made from seaweed extract. Once they hit stomach acid, they react and form a gel-like layer that floats on top of your stomach contents, literally a raft. This can help reduce reflux and LPR symptoms, especially when lying down.
To show how this works before tasting it, we ran a quick visual demo: a spoonful of Reflux Raft dropped into a glass of vinegar (standing in for stomach acid). After a bit of swirling to mimic natural stomach movement, the mixture rose to the surface and formed a loose, floating layer. It's not a perfect stand-in for your stomach, but it's a helpful way to visualize the raft effect before you ever take a dose.
Taste Test: Reflux Raft Lemon Ginger
Per the label, the serving size is one to two teaspoons. We measured out a single teaspoon to get an accurate read.
Texture: The product comes out as a jiggly, gel-like consistency. not watery, not chalky, somewhere in between.
Flavor: Lemon ginger delivers exactly what it promises. There's a bright lemon note up front, followed by that familiar warm ginger spice at the back of the throat. A subtle sweetness rounds things out without tipping into overly sugary territory. Overall, it's a well-balanced, pleasant-tasting supplement, not something you have to force down.
Perceived effect: It felt like it started working almost immediately, coating the throat in a way that felt soothing right out of the gate.
Our Ratings
- Taste: 8/10 — genuinely pleasant, balanced citrus and spice, not overly sweet
- Effectiveness: 8/10 — based on regular personal use for managing reflux symptoms
- Would we keep it in rotation? Yes. It's a staple we reach for regularly to help manage acid reflux.
What's Next in This Series
Reflux Raft Lemon Ginger is just the first stop. We'll be working through other alginates on the market, including Reflux Gourmet, original Gaviscon (both the UK and US formulations), and Gaviscon tablets — so stay tuned for more taste tests and comparisons.
Managing Reflux While You Sleep (or Travel)
Alginates are a great tool for managing reflux in the moment, but elevation matters too. Sleeping with your head raised is one of the most effective ways to keep acid where it belongs overnight. That's exactly what Travelwedge PRO is built for: a self-inflating bed wedge you can use at home or bring along when you travel, so you're never stuck sleeping flat.
